Maintenance of web sites is usually a painfully slow process. This is cause by an unnecessarily complicated procedure. Suppose there is a text on your site which you want to change. You communicate to you web site developer what you want to change and what the new text should be. Your web site developer has other customers and activities so that, if you are lucky, he comes around to implementing your change within a few days. He confirms the change, sends you a bill, you check the new text and if you are not satisfied the whole process starts again the beginning. All that for the change of perhaps only one sentence! This slow way of working does not go along with the age of internet, where everything is happening lightning fast. And it leads to companies not keeping their sites up to date, because it's too much of a hassle to make changes. And, to make matters worse, it unnecessarily costs you money. You have to pay for every single change, or order an expensive maintenance contract.

When we first got the idea to solve this problem by installing software on the sites of our clients with which they could edit the text on their sites online themselves, we looked around for available software to accomplish this. Indeed, various packages were available, but each and every one of them turned out to have one of both of the following two flaws. First, before editing usually a user first has to log on to a separate site and navigate through an oftentimes complicated tree structure of files to find the file he needs to edit. After editing and saving he then has to go back to the site to check whether the result is satisfactory. Second, the editing usually takes place in the original HTML code (HTML is the standard programming language of the web) instead of mostly in normal text.

Thes two problems almost completely cancel out any possible gains from a page editing system, since given the amount of knowledge and steps required, the user could just as well learn to use conventional off-line editing tools to maintain his site. But the goal is, or should be, to be able to edit without knowledge of HTML and without file structure navigation and other time consuming actions.

Sturman Enterprises then decided to develop its own software, with the following three features:

  • From each page on the site the user can immediately edit that same page in his own browser.
  • Editing is possible without knowledge of HTML.
  • The changes can can be viewed directly in the actual site.

We have succeeded in accomplishing these goals with our package SE-Page. The editing method is as follows. On each page which contains changeable text you will find a small graphic at the end of the page, such as a small triangle or circle. If desired, the graphic can also me made invisible. If you want to change your site, you simple go to the page you want to change on your site in your own browser. You click on the graphic at the bottom of the page. Then you fill in your user name and password. If they are correct, you immediately gain access to a page where you can edit the various pieces of text for the particular page. You then click on "Save changes" and then you can directly view the changed page on your site. If you want to edit more than one page during the same session, you do not have to fill in your user name and password again each time. This system turns out to be so efficient that we use it ourselves to maintain this site.

Other web site developers charge you for every small change you make, or offer you an expensive maintenance contract. With Sturman Enterprises you only pay once for the development or your site and thereafter you only need to pay if you want to extend the site or wish to change the structure of design. But in practice most companies don't have a need for that very often. Most changes required are changes in the text, which from now on you can do yourself .

With this demo you can test it yourself, to see how it works.
